CHIKURUBI PRISON TOUR

- Tanaka Mahanya

DELEGATES from neighbouring countries have toured Chikurubi Farm Prison to benchmark the country’s correctional centres.

The delegates included Mozambican Prison Services director of operations, Chief Superintendent Fernando Sumana, Namibian Correctional Services Commissioner General, Raphael Hamunyela, Eswatini Correctional Services Deputy Commissioner General Vusi Kunene and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu.

Speaking during the tour, Comm Gen Chihobvu said it’s an important exercise that ensures efficiency in prisons.

“Earlier this year, we had visitors from heads of correctional services from Botswana and Mozambique with the objective of evaluating our way of doing things.

“This is why we have these countries benchmarking us again this year.

“This visit is very important to us as an organisation because we are aware that our neighbouring friends are noticing the progress we are making in terms of production,” he said.

Comm-Gen Chihobvu said they were planning exchange programmes, through the signing of MOUs with Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique.

“We are already exchanging services with Zambia where our officers went for training,” he said.

Comm Gen Chihobvu said although they are getting support from the Government, it was not enough.

“It will only be enough if we produce and grow more to feed our inmates.

“Other countries are doing well when it comes to the parole system, so it is for us to learn and adopt that practice,” he said.
