ZIMPAPERS CEO HAILS CANCER POWER WALK PARTNERS

- Paidamoyo Bore

ZIMPAPERS Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Pikirayi Deketeke, has commended sponsors and participants who took part in the company’s annual Cancer Power Walk held recently across the country.

Speaking during the handover of money raised during the campaign to Island Hospice and Healthcare in Harare yesterday, Mr Deketeke said the donations will go a long way in helping cancer patients.

This year’s Cancer Power Walk raised $20 million.

“It is critical that we begin to pay back to society, either in money or to raise awareness in some of these critical things that make up who we are in our societies.

“We are not doing Island Hospice a favour, but as individuals and Zimpapers, we are playing our part,” he said.

He emphasised that Zimpapers will always continue taking huge steps in helping improve its consumers’ lives.

Mr Deketeke encouraged people to be screened for cancer early to save lives.

Island Hospice and Healthcare General Manager, Mr Mudiwa Mundawarara, hailed Zimpapers for its partnership in the fight against cancer through information dissemination.

“One of the most important things in dealing with cancer is information, as people are able to learn more about it

“So we are grateful to Zimpapers for allowing us to use their electronic and print media to get the cancer message out.

“Cancer can be treated if detected early enough and that is why information is vital in that people are encouraged to be screened.”

He added:

“Many of our patients can not afford and these donations will help to save lives, hence we would like to thank everyone who participated in the walk,” said Mundawarara.

Penalope Mutumba, who has participated in every Cancer Power Walk since its inception, encouraged people to take the walk seriously.

“I joined the walk in 2016 when it started and, for me, by then it was just for fun.

“But, I have realised that it is the little effort that we can do to fight cancer.

“Therefore, I call upon everyone next year to take part in the walk because the little we donate makes a change.

“Apart from the donations, it’s a form of exercise we all need and as it helps to fight depression.”
