DEPUTY MINISTER HAILS ALGERIAN EXHIBITION
DEPUTY Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Ruth Mavhunga-Maboyi, yesterday hailed Algerian women on their inaugural launch of the traditional wear and culinary exhibition in Harare.
Algeria this year celebrates its 60th independence anniversary and the 68th anniversary of the Algerian Revolution.
She stated they have been doing a wonderful job in protecting and safeguarding their culture.
Deputy Minister Mavhunga-Maboyi said their traditional wear and food exhibition is an important form of social identity which must not be abandoned.
“Besides protecting and safeguarding their culture, they
have also positively used it to influence other nations so that they see the need and importance of cultural preservation and identity.”
She said Algerian men were proud of their “Burnous” and
“Djellaba” wear, while women wear the “Karakou” and the traditional festive dress called the “Djeba.” among many others.
Speaking at the same event, Marissa Yazid, wife of the Algerian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, said it was a wonderful opportunity for the people of Zimbabwe, and Algeria, to share their great cultural experiences.
“I am glad to share with you that this is another great opportunity for the people of Zimbabwe and Algeria to share their great experiences and deepen our existing relations through our cultures.
“Women’s costumes and men’s wear from all regions of the country remain reputable in Africa and beyond, with their combinations also harmonised by fine embroidered material enhanced by traditional Algerian jewellery,” she said.
The Deputy Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Jennifer Mhlanga, also graced the event.
