Mnangagwa a Mugabe copycat

- O GUTU

THE second republic's thrust is to totally move away from a command economy. Moving from a command economy to a free market economy has its challenges.

In the short-term and in the absence of effective communication, a lot will be wrongly yearning for yesteryear which had no future, but a system designed to maintain political power.

In a transition, results do not come overnight and in most cases the situation in the short term will be worse than the one the system is trying to move away from. This requires strong and true leadership, with a vision. Zimbabwe has no other option, but to soldier on, a free market economy is what will bring prosperity for all. When Finance minister Mthuli Ncube was appointed, he correctly identified our problems, currency issue, low production, inconsistency and self-serving policies.

To solve what Ncube indentified as the problem in the economy, hard choices must be made, yes the road will be bumpy but a necessary journey.

Everyone must come to the party and fully support efforts by Ncube to stabilise and grow the economy. The issue of a dual economic system must go, it does not work. We cannot say we have done away with the multicurrency system and have reintroduced our Zimbabwe dollar, yet government continues to charge for its services in United States dollars.

This does not work, so government must make up its mind and re-dollarise if that is the desire, but doing so means we must forget about promoting production and being a middle-income economy by 2030.

The second republic has gone back to the days of policy inconsistency which scares away investors.
