Victory is certain

- Mutsa Murenje Mutsa Murenje writes in his personal capacity

DEAR Mr President,

We are going through extremely difficult circumstances and you are the reason behind this. Patriotic Zimbabweans boldly stood against your corrupt regime and vowed to stage peaceful protests on July 31, 2020. Instead of demonstrating your maturity and showing that you were a discerning and listening President, you responded in an unsurprisingly predictable manner that we have known the Zanu PF regime to resort to whenever it finds itself cornered politically.

Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume encouraged the oppressed and long-suffering of Zimbabwe to peacefully protest against State corruption and Zanu PF brutality. Their peaceful campaign, waged successfully on social media platforms, gained momentum and massive support from Zimbabweans at home and abroad. In your typical jittery manner, you unleashed partisan police officers to violently arrest Chin’ono in what would have probably ended up being an abduction and murder. The amount of force used to effect an arrest on an unarmed citizen is and will never be justifiable in any democratic society.

We condemn, in the strongest of terms, your brazen attacks on our fundamental human rights and freedoms. We know Chin’ono and Ngarivhume are behind bars because they exposed your esurience even though you are aware that more than half of the population is facing starvation. Political legitimacy is never derived from the deployment of brutal tactics against peaceful citizens.

Sir, you mustn’t be under any form of illusion. You lack legitimacy and that explains why you are quick to use force to unconstitutionally remain in power despite knowing that your time is up.

Another journalist Mduduzi Mathuthu is in hiding as I am writing this and his crime is being an investigative journalist. Are you criminalising journalism in Zimbabwe? His nephew, Tawanda Muchehiwa has already been physically brutalised. Although he survived the ordeal which appeared to have your full backing, we are very worried about your reliance on political violence to discourage political dissent. What crime did Mathuthu commit apart from working with Chin’ono to expose your gluttonous traits? Why did 22-year-old Muchehiwa go through that attempted murder for his relationship to Mathuthu? You can’t bully us into silence by employing undemocratic and authoritarian measures. You will be brought to justice.

We have noted with concern continued arrests of citizens defying your unconstitutional breaches. Stop victimising our women in Harare and Bulawayo. You are repeating what you did to the MDC Alliance trio. What is Noxolo Maphosa’s crime that your evil forces would follow, abduct, and sexually assault her? You are hazardous to Zimbabwe and the earlier you realise, this the better. It doesn’t make any sense that you keep denying the existence of these brutalities and yet our people are experiencing hell on earth due to your misrule.

You forced your way to the presidency and you keep forcing yourself on us. We don’t need you, and you must begin to pack your bags and pave way for a democratically elected leader. No one believes that you really won the July 30, 2018 elections. Overwhelming evidence points to your unpopularity in both Zanu PF and in Zimbabwe as a whole. Stubborn, arrogant, and brutal dictators have always had a miserable end and without doubt, you are taking our nation towards that eventuality. It would not be redundant to remind you about what happened to the late Libyan despot Muammar Gaddafi, but you are likely to end the same way. That was a very unfortunate development and we wouldn’t want that to happen to you.

One thing that we are aware of as paladins is that the world is watching closely what you are doing. Keep abusing your illegitimate authority thinking that you are invincible. The use of force in international law is justifiable, especially when nations are exposed to the ugly brutalities as those we are facing in Zimbabwe now. We will not hesitate to support these initiatives. Get ready for a rude awakening because you are pushing us towards breaking point and soon, we won’t be taking any more of your nonsense. Forewarned is forearmed.

Egregious violations of human rights will never go unpunished in Zimbabwe or wherever they are committed. We’ll keep highlighting and cataloguing the extent of human rights abuses and exposing their details.

Criminal prosecution awaits you and those who are helping you to oppress our people today. We are taking charge of our destiny and we are morbidly conscious of the fact that ignoring carnage seriously jeopardises peace, security, and justice in our country.

You thought you had won against the people when you unleashed your terror gangs onto our streets. What the people might not have managed to do on the streets is being realised online. We will forever be grateful to technological advances that facilitate the realisation of democratic gains even as we are suffocating under the weight of oppressive regimes. We appreciate the sterling efforts of all Zimbabweans scattered across the globe who have popularised the

#ZimbabweanLivesMatter campaign. Fellow citizens, your efforts aren’t in vain. Victory is certain and Mnangagwa will soon be history.

The United Nations secretarygeneral has revealed he is paying attention to developments in Zimbabwe. Neighbouring South Africa has sent envoys while Namibia believes the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) is capable of addressing matters of this nature. We hope the Namibians are right. Sadc has disappointed us before and we hope they won’t let us down this time around. Former Botswana President Ian Khama, regrets supporting you and attending your inauguration in November 2017. That’s just how incompetent you are as the imposed President of Zimbabwe. We want a free, just, and democratic Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, you aren’t the right person to help us realise this noble dream. Allow us to develop and grow, Sir.

I trust you will ponder upon these matters.

Till next time, it’s goodbye for now!
