Why was Energy minister Chasi fired?

- Tofara Zhanje

IT is regrettable to note that President Emmerson Mnangagwa just makes decisions without even consulting his advisers about the non-performance of Cabinet ministers.

I wonder if at all he consults anyone, or it’s just a one-man band.

The whole nation was shocked to hear that Energy minister Fortune Chasi was fired despite being one of the best performers.

We all agree that with Chasi overseeing the energy sector, the electricity situation had improved a lot in the country.

I, for one, was elated when I heard Mnangagwa addressing a gathering at a field day at Kunatsa Farm in Matepatepa, Bindura, telling those who cared to listen that Chasi was doing well as Energy minister.

I was later to learn that he was fired, which boggles the mind, why he fired him if his performance was above many others? Is it that Chasi was a victim of factional fights within the ruling Zanu PF party?

Why did Mnangagwa change a team which was doing so well? Is it that Chasi was fired for trying to block lucrative and corrupt deals involving tycoons who allegedly have some measure of influence on those in top leadership?

As a nation, we are now feeling the heat following Chasi’s dismissal as power supply interruptions have returned.

We are tired of Zesa Holdings’ cheap propaganda that the power outages being experienced in the country are due to technical faults at the Kariba and Hwange power stations. We do not buy that.

What really is the problem in our country? Is it that we are being led by the wrong person? Only time will tell.
