Understanding Moses and Jesus Christ

- Erasmus Makarimayi

YOU have probably heard some doctrines saying that they trust Moses more than the revelation in the New Testament. Their argument is that the books of Moses ie Torah, Law or Pentateuch in biblical order come before the Gospels and Epistles/Letters.

This school of thought's point of departure is erroneous assertion that the Law came before Grace or the Gospel of Christ. I have repeatedly stated on this platform that the Bible is one book from Genesis to Revelation. Let me immediately prove that the Gospel predated the Law of Moses.

For starters, Genesis is the beginning. The Law of Moses came in Exodus. By this time the promise of the Gospel of Christ had been already made to Abraham to be fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Let's read Galatians 3:16-17 (Amplified), "[16] Now the promises (covenants, agreements) were decreed and made to Abraham and his Seed (his Offspring, his Heir). He [God] does not say, And to seeds (descendants, heirs), as if referring to many persons, but, And to your Seed (your Descendant, your Heir), obviously referring to one individual, Who is [none other than] Christ (the Messiah). [17] This is my argument: The Law, which began 430 years after the covenant [concerning the coming Messiah], does not and cannot annul the covenant previously established (ratified) by God, so as to abolish the promise and make it void."In simple terms, the Law came 430 years later and couldn't undo what God had already promised, established and ratified.

The Law was an addendum. It was to handle time before the Messiah. Galatians 3:23-27, "[23] But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. [26] For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

Please hear me and hear me well. We're in Christ and not in Moses. Allow me to emphasise, born again believers are in Christ not in Moses.

Moses himself said there was going to come a Prophet greater than him. Please note my capital letter P. Deuteronomy 18:15 states, "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;" We listen (hearken) to this Prophet and His name is Jesus Christ. We also know that Jesus was/is more than a prophet. Jesus came to free or redeem us from the Law. Apostle Paul clarifies in Galatians 4:3-5, "[3] Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: [4] But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, [5] To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons."

Jesus fulfilled the Law to save us by believing in Him. His finished or accomplished work is our passport to adoption as sons and daughters of God the Father. It's Christ's faith not the faith of Moses.

Another error is that Moses saw and talked to God face to face. Biblical truth is that Moses dealt with angels. The 10 commandments were written by angels not God. Acts 7:53 reads, "Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it."

Furthermore, Moses saw an angel not God in the burning bush. This is supported by Acts 7:30, "And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush." I have told you before that there's a biblical method of interpretation called logic. Would you rather believe Jesus or Moses? Selah. John 1:18 states, "No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him." Jesus is our reflection of God the Father and our Mediator.

We're able ministers of the New Testament and not the Law. 2 Corinthians 3:6, Amplified, spells out, "[It is He] Who has qualified us [making us to be fit and worthy and sufficient] as ministers and dispensers of a new covenant [of salvation through Christ], not [ministers] of the letter (of legally written code) but of the Spirit; for the code [of the Law] kills, but the [Holy] Spirit makes alive."

We preach Grace which is Trust according to John 1:17, "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ." Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Grace and peace be multiplied to you through knowledge.
