Alvarez, Smith agree blockbuster super fight

-

LAS VEGAS — Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith have reportedly agreed terms on a blockbuster fight at supermiddleweight for December.

Mexican sensation Canelo has been searching for an opponent after breaking free from Golden Boy Promotions and his £278 million deal with DAZN.

The multi-weight world champion had grew tired at his lack of activity, having not fought since beating Sergey Kovalev last November when he added the WBO light-heavyweight world title to his collection of belts.

However, the pound-for-pound star is set to make his return next month in a mega fight with the number one ranked super-middleweight Smith.

According to ESPN, both fighters have reached an agreement to meet in December while the AT&T Stadium in Texas is being lined up as a possible venue. Smith was in talks to face Canelo, who won a world title at 168lbs in 2018, earlier this year but the fight never materialised.

This would not be the first time Canelo has fought British opposition, having previously defeated Ryan Rhodes, Amir Khan and Smith's brother Liam.

A date is yet to be confirmed for their clash but the 19th has been earmaked. Surprisingly, other reports have claimed that the fight will not be broadcasted on pay-per-view.

Canelo easily represents the toughest test of Smith’s career with the Brit’s best win to date coming against George Groves back in 2018.

Smith will however hold a significant height and reach advantage over Canelo and is widely seen as someone who could cause the Mexican troubles. Canelo is the biggest star in boxing and it is likely that the possibility of fans attending will be explored, given the scale of this fight. —
