- Jonah Nyoni ● Jonah Nyoni is an author and motivational speaker

Growing old is automatic, growing up is optional. We are counting down on 2020. That means we are growing old and there is no going back. What did you achieve? What did you improve in your life this year? 2020 might not have been a good year because of COVID-19, but we have had lessons through it.

Mindset

There are simple tools to help you improve your mind and most people don’t use that at all. Improve your mind. If you stop growing you start to die slowly or be irrelevant. You are paid to the level of your worth. The moment you add value to yourself, you choose what the market pays you, but if your value is still low the market chooses what you are paid. So to improve your worth, you have to improve yourself. Simple ways to improve your mind: reading quality books, seeking advice from right people, and watching or listening to quality information.

Money

You also need to learn the principles of money. Money is controlled by laws. One of those laws is the law of attraction. You attract so much money, but the person you have become. Learn money from those that have made more than you. Read the books and the bible. Money gives you freedom to choose your life. All people, or most people want money, but they have not mastered the money game. The misery with most people is not because of the problems they have, but it’s a money problem. Know how to make, manage, and multiply your money.

Body

Your physical body must be maintained well so that you are able to enjoy a healthy life. It’s never good to make money only to use it for hospital bills because of lack of physical management. Have time to exercise and eat healthy.

Hard skills

Find time to improve your skills. Talent is never enough alone. Your axe has to be constantly sharpened. Skill improves your personal effectiveness, speed, agility and efficiency. You can acquire these skills from seminars or workshops, universities, online, and from mentorship.

Soft kills

Improve your soft skills. Yes, you might have hard skills as mentioned above, but soft skills are also important. Soft skills give you the ability to relate and make the best out of relationships. Work on your attitude, emotional intelligence, communication, confidence, empathy and professional etiquette. Associates

You need other people to help you. You need a coach, mentor, advisor, and trainer. Avoid time wasting friends or people. Surround yourself with people that challenge you to grow daily. Don’t be content in the midst of people who celebrate mediocrity. Average is not good.

Leadership

Improve a skill in leadership. John C Maxwell says, “Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less”. You can lead with your talent. What is your talent? Lead in that talent.

Parting point: We have 19 days left before we end 2020. This was an eventful year. Improve in these seven areas in your life: the mind, money, body, soft skills, hard skills, leadership and associates.
