Has God forsaken us or have we forsaken God?

- Rabbi Shanobi

WHEN things appear to go horribly wrong in the world, people ask “Where is God?” With the coronavirus causing untold death in the world, the question is on everyone’s lips. Who would have thought that time would come when the whole world would be forbidden to go to church?

As things stand right now all over the world people are not allowed to congregate and worship God. All religious activity where people congregate is banned. What is happening is unthinkable.

Let me put this into perspective: Israel never thought that the Temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed. God had said to King Solomon after he had finished building the Temple of the Lord that His presence would always be in the Temple. 1 Kings 9:1-3, when the Lord Jesus Christ told the Jews that “destroy this Temple and in three days I will raise it up” it became a treasonous statement to the Pharisees. Who could destroy what God had decreed? Anyway, the second temple was destroyed by the Romans in AD70 and it shocked the Jews and the whole world.

How do we explain this?

• God is Sovereign and can do whatever He wants. He is not answerable to man.

• He does not think like us. He says: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

• Nothing happens here on earth without His approval. This is why in the Lord’s prayer we say let thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What should we do?

Let’s repent and come back to God, We have become too independent of God. Let’s turn away from violence and evil.

• Has God forsaken us or have we forsaken God?

• Let us acknowledge that God is the ultimate authority over our lives.

• Let the Shepherds (pastors) turn from their evil ways.

Whether we agree or not the state of affairs in the world before the coronavirus was just like Sodom and Gomorrah. We had lost the moral compass.

In fact, it was the pastors who stirred the wrath of God and contributed to Judah being taken into captivity in Babylon. Very sad, his daughter says he cheated on his wife.

God help us.
