Talk of a mass bidding war soon sparked, with each of Manchester City, United and Chelsea all linked.
Spurs, however, are understood to be livid given the timing comes in the final week of the season when a Europeanplaced finish is yet to be achieved.

Spurs need results in their final two matches in order to nail down a Europa League finish.
Mathematically, they have not been ruled out of the running for the Champions League, but would require Liverpool and Chelsea to lose their remaining matches.
Kane, who will turn 28 in July, remains contracted to the club until the summer of 2024, after signing a lucrative six-year deal in 2018 to become the club’s highest earner.
Previous reports have suggested that Kane has a “gentleman’s agreement” with club chairman Daniel Levy, though the 59-year-old is known in the football world as a notoriously tough negotiator.
Spurs are understood to value Kane around the £150 million mark, and would look to drive up the price further still in light of heavy interest.
While both Manchester clubs and Chelsea have been linked from the Premier League, Kane is also said to be wanted by French giants Paris Saint Germain, which would set up a reunion with his former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
