Govt must be proactive on demolitions

-

THE second republic led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa needs to be proactive than being reactive and employing kneejerk policies.

This cold winter has seen the government demolishing people’s sources of livelihood in Harare and Chitungwiza.

Instead of constructing proper market stalls and houses as per its 2018 pre-election promises, it has embarked on demolitions.

The government should, in fact, spend its energy and power on eradicating poverty and fighting corruption which have brought untold suffering to the masses.

After being promised swimming pools and repainting of flats, Mbare residents had their market stalls demolished. What crime did the people commit to deserve such ill-treatment from their own government?

It is the duty of the government to come up with a database of these prospective vendors and build them habitable structures like what is happening in neighbouring South Africa and other countries.

If these small businesses are formalised, it will improve the economy as they will be contributing to Treasury.

What is surprising is that government is destroying these people’s markets at a time when there is no employment to talk about in the country.

The Mnangagwa-led government has dismally failed to create employment, but has the audacity to extend Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s tenure in office after reaching 70 years.

Our economic plans from the Finance minister Mthuli Ncube are not working and are rather punishing the already burdened poor majority.

The government is not committed to creating employment and ensure the dignity of its people is restored.
