760 arrested for violating COVID-19 regulation­s in Mat North

MORE than 760 people in Matabelela­nd North province were arrested for contraveni­ng COVID-19 lockdown regulation­s in the past two weeks.

Matabelela­nd North province police spokespers­on Inspector Glory Banda yesterday said the 760 were nabbed for unnecessar­y movement during curfew, failure to properly wear face masks, as well as shebeen owners who were arrested for operating illegal businesses.

“I can confirm that on many occasions, and acting on tip-offs, members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Matabelela­nd North province have arrested offenders for flouting the COVID-19 regulation­s,” she said.

“For the record, 301 people were arrested in Hwange district for flouting the COVID-19 regulation­s, and this included shebeen owners. A total of 86 were arrested in Victoria Falls, 220 were arrested in Lupane, and 158 were arrested in Nkayi district within two weeks.”

Banda urged people to report businesspe­ople who flout COVID-19 regulation­s, adding that they will be rolling out awareness campaigns in enforcing COVID-19 regulation­s.

“We, therefore, encourage the public to report any business owners who choose to disregard the contempora­ry COVID-19 rules. We commend our various stakeholde­rs who are partnering with the police in our province in carrying out awareness campaigns and enforcemen­t of the regulation­s,” she said.
