Incompetent Coventry must be fired

- Mai Ruru

THE current Cabinet is not inspiring, as it has some vultures and elements who are incompetent and bent on derailing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts to resuscitate the economy.

We need competent people who can deliver key results.

I personally have a problem with how Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation minister Kirsty Coventry is running the affairs of her portfolio.

As a youth, Olympian and sports administrator, one would be tempted to assume that she knows the demands of her ministry.

The $17 million Youth Relief Fund set aside by government to cushion youthled businesses against the effects of COVID-19 across Zimbabwe was abused under her watch.

The relief fund had stringent application conditions which prevented many young people from applying and benefitting from it.

Our sport is on the death bed with some teams on the brink of collapse. One of the oldest football clubs in Zimbabwe, Highlanders, is failing to pay its players and the responsible minister is conspicuous by her silence.

I also have problems with three ministries that is Finance (Mthuli Ncube), Women Affairs, Community, Small and Enterprises Development (Sithembiso Nyoni) and the Industry and Commerce (Sekai Nzenza) as nothing inspiring is taking place there.

It would be ideal to bring in new blood. I would rather suggest, it is ideal to have an inclusive arrangement by appointing some from the opposition.

For now, I don’t think we need deputy ministers. Since we have limited resources as a nation it would be good to make use of permanent secretaries and principal directors of the respective ministries so as to cut down on expenditure.
