Chunga plots Chapungu Premiership comeback
WITH Division One football finally set to resume after a yearand-half of dormancy, revered tactician Moses Chunga is set to make his return to the dugout five years after his last job with Premier Soccer League club Harare City.
The former Dynamos midfielder had been unattached since parting ways with the Sunshine Boys in December 2016.
His appointment at Chapungu saw him succeed the unheralded Thomas Chinyan’anya, who was in charge when the club was relegated at the end of the 2019 season.
Chunga’s debut, though, was delayed following the halt on football and all sporting activities owing to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Although the 56-year-old will be coaching in a less fashionable second-tier league, his arrival has triggered anticipation in a league that also houses several experienced coaches that include John Nyikadzino, Tendai Chikuni and Lizwe Sweswe, among others.
Chunga, however, is playing his cards close to the chest in anticipation of turning a corner for Chapungu, by getting them promoted back to the top-flight.
“For now, I am not saying much. I reserve my better comments because it is still early. Things are not yet clear how we are going to move from this point to the next as a club,” Chunga said.
Chapungu have often made light work of teams in the Central Region, Bambo as Chunga is affectionately known, is still expected to transform them into a formidable force.
Meanwhile, the Central Region along with the other three regions informed clubs of the resumption roadmap in compliance with government directives.
Clubs began vaccination of their players and staff members on Monday in a process that is expected to end on September 17.
The pre-season training has been pencilled to begin on September 20 while the league programme will kick off on October 29, ending next year in May.
