Mwonzora showing signs of cowardice

- Pardon Maguta

THE call by the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T to suspend 2023 general elections is an act of cowardice born out of fear of losing the polls to MDC Alliance president Nelson Chamisa.

Secondly, dialogue cannot replace elections, especially the uncalled for Political Actors Dialogue type of dialogue. Voting is a constitutional right. Anyone who seeks to deny people their right to vote is a criminal. In fact, such calls are treasonous.

Our Constitution is very clear that after every five years from the previous elections, we must go to elections. It is also clear that by-elections must be held within 90 days of the occurrence of a vacancy if a constituency or ward loses its elected representative.

People know that Mwonzora is leading a party without members or followers, so he is trying by all means to avoid elections as long as he can. Politics is a game of numbers and no one can get political members through a court process.

The current MDC-T leadership knows this, it knows that elections will expose them. The real court in politics are the voters. Mwonzora is not blind to that fact. He knows that by-elections will make him look like Abel Muzorewa after the 1980 elections.

Politics is a game of numbers. They can delay the elections through their collusion with Zanu PF, but they cannot deny people their right to vote forever. The right to vote is sacrosanct.

There are only two serious political parties in Zimbabwe and Mwonzora’s party is not one of them and, therefore, cannot seek to make decisions which seriously affect people.

The distractions which the MDC-T has been doing since its court political resurrection cannot go unchallenged as long as it tables and lobbies for unconstitutional actions to hide its political impotences.

It is a fact that Mwonzora cannot win any election. All the constituencies and wards which lost their representatives through death or recalls need representatives.

So Mwonzora should not take the electorate for granted, because one day he will be punished.

The right to vote is not negotiable and cannot be replaced by useless dialogue which benefits political actors.

Throughout the world, countries have held polls amid the COVID-19 pandemic, so why not us?

If Mwonzora’s party is not comfortable with the holding of elections it can boycott and let those who want to exercise their right to vote do so.
