Women hockey team happy with preparatio­ns

ZIMBaBWe women hockey team is optimistic of doing well at the africa Cup of Nations 2022 to be held in accra, Ghana from January 17-23.

the top players will battle it out for honours in Pool a against south africa, Namibia and Uganda.

Hockey associatio­n of Zimbabwe secretary-general sarah Bennet told NewsDay Sport that her organisati­on was fundraisin­g for the tournament.

“the aim is to ensure we secure adequate funding to attend the africa Cup of Nations.”

“this tournament is of utmost importance for valuable world-ranking points, but more importantl­y to ensure the developmen­t and progress made over the last couple of years in regards to ladies hockey continues in a positive manner,” she said.

team coach trish Davis expressed hope that the team would do well at the championsh­ips considerin­g the effort they had put in training.

“Considerin­g what we have to go through due to COVID-19. I am happy with the progress and all I can say is that I am in good vibes about our side doing well at the championsh­ips and considerin­g the performanc­e shown by our athletes, I am confident we will do well,” she said.

Captain Mary Campbell showered praises on her teammates, saying they have what it takes to do well at the tournament.

“We are hoping to get a podium finish and that is being in the top three and I am glad that we are well prepared and ready to take our opponents head on. We have skilled and strong players that have the burning desire to progress and to put our country on the world map.”

the Under-21 ladies Hockey team has also managed to reach the last 16 of the Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2021.

the tournament is being held in Potchefstr­oom, south africa from December 5-16 2021.

Following the COVID-19-induced break in activity, the team is utilising the little time they have to properly prepare for the tournament.
