Caps players call off strike

NORMALCY has returned to the Caps United camp after players ended their training boycott to prepare for their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Black Rhinos on Sunday.

The players resumed training yesterday after receiving part of what they were owed.

With the league resuming this weekend after a break since December, the match between Rhinos and Caps, which was postponed due to Makepekepe’s financial woes, was under threat again.

But it looks like all has been resolved and the Lloyd Chitembwe (pictured)-coached side, which has so far played two matches and drawn both, can relaunch its bid.

Informed sources said Caps president Farai Jere, who is expected back home from Cameroon where he had travelled for the Africa Cup of Nations finals, managed to arrange for the players to get paid.

A club official confirmed that the issue had been resolved, adding that there was no need for the players to boycott training in the first place.

“It’s sad that players sometimes are not patient. We expect players to behave like professionals. You can’t have professional players refusing to train just because there has been a delay in salary payments. The club understands it has been difficult. But now things have got back to normal and we expect commitment from the lads,” the official said.

Caps started training a week ago well after several teams had begun their preparations following a lengthy break necessitated by the Warriors’ participation at the just-ended African Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
