Musona propels new club out of drop zone

-

JOHANNESBURG — Former Kaizer Chiefs hitman Knowledge Musona has continued his excellent recent exploits in front of goal for Saudi Arabia Pro League club Al-Tai.

Musona joined Al-Tai at the beginning of the season after choosing against returning to South Africa with reported interest from Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

This past weekend, in his second game back from the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals with Zimbabwe, Musona was the stand-out performer with two assists in a 3-1 win over Al-Batin.

In typical Musona fashion, he set up Argentine Tobias Figueroa to score with a header, while also stealing the ball from the feet of an Al-Batin defender to set up Cephas Malele for the second of the three goals by Al-Tai on the day.

Musona was a menace all day running rings around the visitors’ defence.

The 31-year-old has proven to be a great signing for the club standing as the leading scorer with five goals plus three assists from 14 appearances despite playing as a midfielder.

He has been the main source of goals for the club which features former Sundowns target Amir Sayoud.

With the win this past weekend, AlTai moved into tenth position and three points clear of the drop zone. Prior to the past weekend’s game, Musona had found his club gradually getting sucked into the mud after four consecutive defeats though he missed three while at the Afcon finals.

Before leaving for the Afcon, Musona scored the only goal that won his club their last match of the year against ALHazem.

It was an extension of a purple patch run during which they had picked up 12 points from 15 available to play for.

Though he has spent most of the last decade playing in Germany and Belgium, Musona remains popular at Chiefs for whom he scored 44 goals during his two spells with the club.
