The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ) has donated roadblock and traffic management equipment to the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

The organisation donated drums, cones and breathalyser machines.

“As part of our strategic objectives, the short-term insurance sector has planned initiatives in a bid to increase its participation and contribution to national development and disaster responsiveness. In assisting the police carry out its traffic law enforcement tasks, the insurance council is today donating roadblock equipment consisting drums and cones to help with the visibility of roadblock set ups,” ICZ deputy spokesperson Wilberforce Machimbidzofa said.

ICZ has been engaging the police over enforcement of statutory insurance requirements, in particular the third-party motor insurance and the public passenger liability cover since it relies heavily on law enforcement services to ensure compliance as well as curtail risks that result from immoral behaviour, which has been proven to be the main cause of road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe.

Police Deputy CommissionerGeneral Mind Ngirande received the donations on behalf of the organisation.

“This generous donation will not only go a long way in enhancing the operational efficiency and effectiveness of traffic policing by the ZRP, but will also serve to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship between the two organisations.

“This dovetails with the government’s thrust of building private-public partnerships on issues of public benefit,” Ngirandi said.

The rising number of accidents due to non-functional robots at intersections has also raised concern at ICZ, leading to its eagerness to be involved in repairing of the damaged infrastructure.

“We do appreciate that there are various stakeholders involved in maintaining the infrastructure and order usage of the facilities.

ICZ is requesting to be included in the activities aimed at resolving the challenge,” Machimbidzofa said.
