BELEAGUERED MDC Alliance leader Douglas Mwonzora (pictured) is allegedly desperate to form a coalition of opposition parties after suffered electoral loss during the March 26 by-elections.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mwonzora said his party’s loss in the by-elections would not affect his vision of uniting the country.

Mwonzora’s party failed to win a single parliamentary or council seat. Of the 28 National Assembly seats, the CCC got 19 and Zanu PF got nine, while the CCC bagged 75 local authority seats and Zanu PF got 47.

“A few days have passed since the by-elections held on the 26th of March, 2022. In these elections, our party did not do well and this has naturally worried our members and supporters,” read Mwonzora’s statement.

“We shall continue advocating for the peaceful resolution of Zimbabwe’s social, political and economic problems. In this regard we remain committed to genuine, inclusive and unconditional dialogue in our country as the mainstay for building a democratic, inclusive and prosperous nation.

“We state for the sake of completeness that these reforms will be achieved through a process of national dialogue.”

But some opposition political parties said they were not keen on being part of Mwonzora’s coalition.

“I do not want to comment on anything involving Mwonzora,” Chamisa curtly said in response to the issue. National Constitutional Assembly leader Lovemore Madhuku said: “We have not been approached by any political party and when we get approached we will respond after consulting our structures,” Madhuku said. Lead president Linda Masarira said: “As a political party, we believe we are at a stage in the democratic transformation of Zimbabwe where we should be able to take off our political jackets and put all the best brains on the table and form a government of national unity.”

FORUS consultant Tinashe Muzamhindo said any alliance of smaller political parties that exclude Chamisa’s CCC party would be tantamount to political suicide.
