THE 2024 edition of the Old Mutual High Schools Quiz, which kicked off last week on May 17 in Midlands, Masvingo, Mashonaland Central and Manicaland provinces, promises to celebrate knowledge, talent and the spirit of competition.

This Friday, the competition will be held in Matabeleland South, Mashonaland West, Matabeleland North, Mashonaland East and Bulawayo provinces, while in Harare competitions will be held on May 27 as top schools battle it out for a chance to advance to the final competition scheduled for September.

In sponsoring the school quiz, in partnership with the Book of African Records, Old Mutual aims to promote education while providing a platform to share knowledge for young minds as it fulfils its commitment to fostering academic excellence and intellectual growth among the country's youths.

This year's event aims to increase the number of participating schools to ensure that every student has an opportunity to participate and shine on the national stage.

Old Mutual group marketing, public affairs and sustainability executive Lillian Mbayiwa said the quiz provides a platform for students to showcase their knowledge.

"We are proud to sponsor the National High School Quiz, as it serves as a powerful catalyst for knowledge and learning. By providing a platform for students to showcase their general knowledge skills, we are investing in the future of our nation," Mbayiwa said.

Mbayiwa added: “The partnership between Old Mutual and the Book of African Records has played a vital role in fostering the growth of young minds through Afrocentric-based quiz competitions. By exploring the rich history of Africa and delving into its geography, current affairs, science, architecture and technology, the quiz not only tests students' general knowledge but also broadens their horizons, instilling a deep appreciation for their heritage.”

The previous editions of the competition witnessed finalists being treated to a twoday programme with educational experiences, including financial education, motivational conversations from Old Mutual leadership, visits to sites such as the Mutual Garden Solar Farm and explorations of the Museum of African Liberation.

Book of African Records acting chief executive officer Tyson Mudarikiri said the competitions showcase the youths’ potential.

"The National High School Quiz is a testament to the talent and potential that exists within our youth. It is a platform that unifies students from diverse backgrounds, encouraging them to strive for academic excellence and become well-rounded individuals." he said.
