Hwange man steals to fulfil prophecy

- Fairness Moyana Hwange Correspondent

A MAN from Hwange has been arrested after he stole three cases of sugar from TM Supermarket before claiming that he intended to send the sugar remotely to some people in Harare whom he had prophesised to be hungry.

Lawrence Munsaka (37) of Lubanda, Dete told Hwange provincial magistrate Miss Sharon Rosemani that he was aware that he was sick but no medicine could treat him as his “illness” was caused by evil spirits which also gave him power to communicate with people as far as Harare through prophesy.

“I’m not crazy or anything but I know I am ill and that sickness cannot be cured by pills as it is caused by spirits. These spirits also give me power to see and contact people remotely. I was sending the sugar to them and I still have to,” said Munsaka sending the court gallery into laughter.

The magistrate advised the State to locate his relatives in order to ascertain if he was on any medication before deferring the trial to another date.

It is understood that on 23 August this year Munsaka went to TM Hwange supermarket where he entered the shop with a trolley.

A few minutes later he passed the tills without paying carrying three cases of sugar valued at $58.50.

At the exit security requested for a receipt but he failed to produce one insisting that he had paid for the goods.

As the security guard tried to confirm with the till operator from which he alleged to have paid to, Munsaka seized the opportunity and bolted out of the supermarket pushing the merchandise.

He was, however, apprehended as he tried to make off with the cases of sugar which he was struggling to carry after abandoning the trolley.

He was handed over to the police and all the three cases of sugar were recovered.

Miss Loveness Maseko prosecuted.
