ZRP launches Client Service Charter in Byo

- Amanda Ncube Sunday News Reporter

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police re- launched its Client Service Charter in Bulawayo yesterday amid calls for police officers to prioritise the safety of members of the public.

Speaking at the re- launch, the acting officer commanding Bulawayo Central District, Superintendent Precious Moyo, said police have a responsibility to protect members of the public as well as their property.

“As you know that the police have the responsibility which is written in the Constitution of the country to keep peace hence the police have a duty to protect the public as well as their property,” she said.

She reminded members of the public that they have the right to speak out and report when they are harassed by police.

Supt Moyo urged members of the public not to hesitate to report to officers in charge whenever they feel their rights have been violated by the police.

“If you feel that you are still not satisfied by the services rendered to you, you can request to see Bulawayo Central District Dispol,” she said.

Supt Moyo said members of the public should also play an active role in curbing crime and should not wait for police to act.

“So as to fight against violence, the police have decided to work hand in hand with the public to eradicate crime,” she said.

Supt Moyo said police have a duty to support Government programmes.

“As the police we have an obligation to support Government programmes which are enlisted in Zimbabwe Agenda for Socio- economic Transformation ( ZimAsset),” said Sup Moyo.

Speaking at the same function Crime Consultative Committee ( CCC) member Mrs Busisiwe Brown said the committee was a forum of sharing information on crime fighting strategies between the police and the public, urging members of the public to co- operate with the police.

“The forum is meant to bring together the police and the community to discuss issues of mutual concern. For this forum to be effective it needs maximum co- operation of the public and to fully support all the community policing initiatives. By working together we hope that crime will be reduced so that the community may live in a safe and secure environment,” said Mrs Brown.

She said some of the community policing initiatives, which members of the public should make use of, include neighbourhood watch committees, suggestion boxes and hotlines, supporting and becoming members of Business Against Crime Forum of Zimbabwe ( Bacfoz).

“This launch we are witnessing today will help to bridge the gap between the police and members of the public. I urge the community at large to be team players in the fight against crime and together we will be victorious,” said the chairperson of BAFCOZ, Mr Vijaykumar Mehta.

Acting Bulawayo Province spokesperson Assistant Inspector Abednico Ncube said the turn out by members of the public at the re- launch was a clear indication of the good relations between the police and the public.
