Man hangs self over girlfriend

A 27-YEAR-OLD Gweru man committed suicide by hanging on a tree in a case suspected to be linked to suspicion that he had impregnated his teenage girlfriend.

The man, Mwaneyi Mathe of Mambo suburb was found hanging on a tree last Wednesday by his neighbours.

Acting Midlands Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident saying investigations were underway to ascertain the reasons behind the suicide.

“I can confirm that, we received a death report of Mwaneyi Mathe (27) who hanged himself last week on Wednesday,” said Insp Mukwende.

A neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Mathe had been stressed for the past two months with rumours that he got his 15-year-old girlfriend pregnant.

“Mathe impregnated his girlfriend and he wasn’t prepared to take responsibility. He tried convincing the girl to abort as he was scared that he might end up in prison since the girlfriend was a minor. He was always stressed,” said the neighbour who refused to be named.

“Due to stress, he was always drunk as he tried to escape from reality. Two weeks before his death he had also stopped going to work. I tried talking to him but he never opened up. He only said that you will miss me because I will be going away where you will not see me again. So we thought he was just hallucinating as somebody who looked stressed.”
