Stay ahead with ICT skills

-

ICT skills not an option for teachers WITH the onset of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) entering the classroom, educators are constantly being challenged by technology, their institutions and their students to keep at least one step ahead.

It’s no longer an option in this day and age to acquire ICT skills if you are an educator. In fact, to be an educator one needs ICT skills. Integration of ICTs into the new curriculum now makes it very challenging to be a teacher without ICT skills hence the need to acquire ICT skills before it’s too late. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Dr Lazarus Dokora said, “no child can leave school and believe they’re educated when they’ve no literacy in ICT. The minister is very clear that all students should have ICT skills when they leave school; however, that can only be possible if the teachers have ICT skills to impart onto the students. Teachers definitely need ICT skills to stay ahead, and to open doors to countless opportunities.

My sister who is a teacher recently finished studying for an ICT skills course and is the only one with an ICT certification at her school, now she is the one who attends workshops to represent the school because most of these need teachers with ICT skills. Now she is like the deputy head as she is the one who attends the workshops on behalf of the headmaster who is also ICT illiterate, she handles all documentation or reporting because she is the only one with the ICT skills.
