THE Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) #JumpstartByo MasterClass, recently held workshops for arts creatives at the Nust American Space.

The workshops attracted an average of about 20 people per class and trended on Twitter for four of the five days that the workshops ran from 6 to 10 March.

The Master Class Week was separated into five classes: Film Production Class which saw participants learning different aspects of Film and premiering a short film, New Media Class which focused on teaching the creatives ways of reaching out to the 21st century audiences by harnessing the power of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and WordPress, Design and Photography Class which saw participants going through latest techniques in Photography and design which are pivotal in great storytelling.

There was also a Writers’ Class which resulted in a publication in 24 hours and the final day of the Master Class was dedicated to teaching and learning Financial Literacy and also doubled as Graduation Day and the launch day of the Writing class’ anthology, Chaotic Peace.

YALI 2015 fellow and organiser of the MasterClass, Kelvin Mutize was pleased at the turnout to the MasterClass, highlighting that the major objectives of the initiative had been met.

“The Yali Creatives #Jumpstart Bulawayo MasterClass were designed to capacitate creatives in Bulawayo to be able to capture, record and effectively tell the African narrative. There remains so many untold stories of Africa that the world still needs to hear that will help the world understand better the story of Africa from Africans as our story has always been told from an outsider perspective. Creatives in Bulawayo were already doing great things in their space and therefore our workshop was aimed at enhancing their storytelling skills go from good to great.”

Facilitators for the different classes included published author and motivational speaker, Njabulo Moyo, Public Relations consultant Gilmore Tee and Digital Design consultant, Tavengwa Jacob Sipapate. Rise Again
