Lets join in the fight against HIV/Aids

-

ALTHOUGH many Zimbabweans have been warned about the dangers of HIV and Aids it is disappointing to see that some Zimbabweans living in other countries especially South Africa are still behaving as if there is no disease whose cure is yet to be found.

Most people living in the country now know that as Zimbabweans we need to join hands to fight HIV but some forget about that once they cross the borders.

I was very much shocked at what I saw when I visited South Africa and Namibia recently. We have a big problem as a country. Although I fully agree that our economy is performing badly at the moment I don’t think it is a passport for anyone to sacrifice his or her own life.

I asked some young girls at Johannesburg car park why they were conducting themselves in such a shameful way in another country. They said they dropped out of school after failing to get school fees and had decided to turn themselves into ladies of the night. Most of them confessed that there is HIV and Aids but for them to earn meaningful money they have to do away with protective measures.

The popular car park in Johannesburg is where more than one hundred crossborder haulage trucks are parked while waiting to get loaded with goods destined for other countries. I was shocked to see that the majority of prostitutes were mostly Zimbabweans.

As if that is not enough some women who are cross-border traders are also seen engaging in prostitution as soon as they cross the border.

Let’s join our hands together and fight against the spread of HIV and Aids. Eddious Masundire Shumba, Hillbrow, Joburg.
