Inaugaral sports science Fest ends

- Clinton Moyo Sunday New Reporter

THE Bulawayo Metropolitan Province’s first ever Annual Science ,Sports and Arts Festival (PASSAF) ended recently after a week long primary and secondary schools activities held at White City Stadium.

The festival was conceived as a key implementation strategy in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the new primary and secondary education curriculum which sought to revamp the colonial education system.

Addressing thousands of learners, teachers, parents and the Bulawayo community at the closing ceremony at the stadium, the Acting Provincial Education Director Olicah Kaira paid tribute to all participants.

“It was a mammoth task holding the festival with learners from Early Childhood Development (ECD) right up to “A” level. This inaugural festival was indeed a success judging by the numbers that took part, the quality of displays and the general commitment shown by all in the implementation of the New Curriculum policy,” said Kaira.

The Technical Manager of the festival, Njabulo Bango, handed over to the Bulawayo Metropolitan Education Directorate a booklet of more than 1000 learners who were selected to represent the province at the National Annual Science, Sports and Arts Festival (NASSAF) to be held in Harare for the country’s ten provinces in early September.

Participants were drawn from disciplines such as athletics, modeling, soccer, science innovation, cricket, volleyball, rugby, basketball, tennis, fine art, performing arts, and culture for both boys and girls.

Winning schools included Milton Junior, Milton High, Godlwayo Primary, Eveline, Matshayisikhova, St. Bernards High and other schools drawn right across the city.

Speaking on the side lines of the closing ceremony, Bulawayo PASSAF Public Relations Manager Giyani Moyo appealed for financial and resource mobilisation for the Bulawayo Team.

“Now that the team has been selected, we need to go on an overdrive campaign to draw both financial and resource support for the travelling contingent to represent Bulawayo in September,” said Moyo.

Moyo advised interested donors to contact the Provincial Education Director as this may be a powerful marketing opportunity for them.
