Boxing board recruits judges, referees

THE Zimbabwe National Boxing Control Board has embarked on a recruitmen­t drive of judges as well as referees to beef up officials as they set the sport on a revival path.

Years of inactivity in the sport has seen the number of judges go down and training courses are set to be held countrywid­e that will see judges and referees being trained. ZNBCB president, Richard Hondo said Dumisani Mankunzini Cricket Festival, being bowler of the year, championsh­ip winning gaffer with Milton High School in the T20 event in 2011 and 2012, has they called a meeting of judges and referees but less than five turned up forcing them to come up with a strategy to recruit more officials.

He said the training was open to all those interested in being part of the sport, male and female.

“We have not had much activity over the past five years and during that period I think officials we had lost interest, while some could have retired and some could have passed on but there were no programmes to enlist the services of new officials. We cannot move on without these two important officials. Anyone interested in the sport is welcome to join us and assist also coached the Zimbabwe Under-9s team.

He said training will be for free and they are encouragin­g both men and women to be part of the new officials handling matches.

Hondo said they had enlisted their officials in various provinces to handle the recruitmen­t and training of the new officials.

“We want as many people as possible to come on board and work with us hence we have spread the recruitmen­t countrywid­e to ensure no one interested is left out,” he said.
