To the Editor NRZ revival to boost economy

-

I WOULD like to commend the Government for its efforts to revive the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).

People from all parts of the country welcomed the decision and were happy to see the equipment arriving from South Africa.

The revival of NRZ will contribute to the development of our economy through relatively cheaper transport and logistic facilities.

Many people were now discussing retrenchment at the parastatal since the volume of traffic was now at its lowest but with this latest development it means more people will be employed and in the process reducing unemployment levels in the country.

As writers this is what we have been crying for now people are there to see the fruits of our independence when more jobs are created for our economy to recover in the near future and this will force those Zimbabweans in other countries to come back home and work for their country.

Workers at NRZ have not been paid on time for a very long time now and most of them are now very happy with the decision by the government to revive their company.

We all know that transport is the backbone of every economy and if transport is expensive then it means the prices of all goods and services will go up.

At the moment Zimbabwe has the most expensive transport when we compare with other countries in the region that is why we see people rush to buy products from other countries even though they are of very poor quality.

Most companies cannot afford to transport their products to markets using haulage trucks and life will be easy now as a result of the revival of NRZ.

These haulage trucks were not only dangerous to other road users but they contributed to the collapse of our road network since most of the time they will be loaded with very heavy goods which are not suitable for our old roads.

We hope the passenger day and night trains will also be back on the rails very soon.

Most fatal accidents have been taking place during the night as a result of over speeding and overnight buses and these haulage trucks which don’t dim their lights at night.

We hope standards of living for everyone will improve as a result of the revival of our economy. Eddious Masundire Shumba, Bulawayo.
