POLICE in Matabeleland South province have impounded more than 70 vehicles for various defects following a blitz launched last month aimed at removing unroadworthy and unregistered vehicles from the road.

Police in Gwanda, Beitbridge, Bulilima and Mangwe districts working with the Vehicle Inspection Department and their municipalities, have been targeting unregistered vehicles, unlicensed drivers and those driving cars without number plates.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the blitz has netted 76 unregistered vehicles in the past week.

“I can confirm that we ran an operation in Gwanda, Beitbridge, Bulilima and Mangwe districts and we impounded 76 vehicles and 95 arrests.

“Among the arrested are those found without a driver’s licence, no defensive driver’s licence, no retest, no route authority, illegal pirating and other offences as the police carried out their duties,” Inspector Ndebele said.

He urged vehicle owners, drivers and motorists in general to observe laws.

“We will continue with the blitz and execute our duties to bring safety to the public. As police we urge motorists to register their vehicles in line with the Road Motor Transportation Act,” he said.
