Hammer and Tongues hail Mzilikazi High School

MZILIKAZI High School, a famed name in Zimbabwean schoolboy football, has been praised by organisers of the country’s fastest growing junior tournament – the Hammer and Tongues St George’s College Invitation­al Tournament with the Bulawayo school likely to be one of the teams at next year’s edition.

A highly entertaini­ng friendly match took place at the Bulawayo school on Friday, where a Hammer and Tongues select team took on the hosts.

The Hammer and Tongues St George’s College Invitation­al Tournament, whose sixth edition was played this year in Harare, involves a cross-section of schools from all corners of the country – and has seen even some private schools, historical­ly not strong in football, come in leaps and bounds as the tournament grows. After this year’s tournament, a select team of the best players was put together and has been on a five-day tour where it will play four games.

The select team arrived in Bulawayo on Thursday, on its way to Victoria Falls, and played out a high scoring 4-4 game with Mzilikazi on Friday.

On their way to Bulawayo, the Hammer and Tongues select stopped over in Ngezi, where they drew 2-2 with a junior select side of PSL side Ngezi Platinum Stars at Baobab Stadium.

“Mzilikazi is a big name in sport in this country, particular­ly in football,” said Hammer & Tongues representa­tive, Ransome Chimonyo.

“The contributi­on your school has made to football in our country, the quality of the players you have produced, must ever be cherished and with that I would like to see you play in the Hammer & Tongues St George’s College Invitation­al Tournament next year. I hope that from among you Mzilikazi boys who played today, some of you will be part of this touring select team next year.”

The iconic Peter Ndlovu, regarded widely as the finest player ever produced in Zimbabwe, went attended Mzilikazi.

Chimonyo revealed plans to send the select team to South Africa next year, while also expressing a desire to tour Barcelona in future.

The select side is set to play Mosi-Oa-Tunya High School in Victoria Falls today before returning to Bulawayo to face Induna High on Tuesday.
