Cheetahs disappoint in Dubai
THE Zimbabwe national sevens rugby team, the Cheetahs had a disappointing show at the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series Dubai leg in the United Arab Emirates where they lost all the five matches they played.
Zimbabwe lost their group matches to South Africa, Argentina and Samoa last Friday to finish bottom of the pool with three points. Yesterday, the Gilbert Nyamutsamba-coached Cheetahs were beaten 38-5 by Canada before they lost 14-10 against Wales. It was never going to be easy for the Stephan Hunduza-led Cheetahs who were the only non-core team at the tournament. While they were blown away by South Africa and Canada, the Cheetahs were beaten by small margins in their other matches. In most of the encounters, they actually had the lead, coming close to winning before giving the game away in the dying moments. Speedster Tafadzwa Chitokwindo was in top form at the Dubai Sevens as he finished the tournament with four tries.
Nyamutsamba said as expected the Dubai Sevens proved to be a tough outing for the Cheetahs who however, gained a lot from the tournament, which they will take going forward.
“Tough tournament as expected, lots of positives to continue on and a lot of lessons learnt,’’ Nyamutsamba said.
From Dubai, the Cheetahs now shift focus to the Cape Town leg of the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series to be played at the Cape Town Stadium on 8 and 9 December.
