Rush, Maphepha for Ubuntu Cup

FORMER Highlander­s players, Rahman Gumbo as well as Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda will be the high profile football personalit­ies at the 20th edition of the Ubuntu Football Associatio­n (UFA) Super Cup to be played over two days at Dupute Primary School in Bulilima District.

Six teams, mostly made up of Zimbabwean­s based in South Africa will take to the field on Thursday and Saturday in what would be the 20th year in a row that the UFA Super Cup is taking place.

Makhulela, Khame, Ndolwane Super Stars, Dupute United, Bubi and Butshe Shining Stars are the teams taking part.

Bowen Ndlovu, the UFA president said Gumbo along with Sibanda had agreed to grace the occasion and they were looking forward to having them at what is a special edition of the annual tournament.

“We are happy Rahman Gumbo and Ernest Sibanda have agreed to attend our tournament, we are looking forward to having them at what promises to be indeed our jam packed 20th anniversar­y,’’ Ndlovu said.

He described the football on display at the tournament as being amazing to watch with some excellent players on show.

“We do have quality players that ply their trades in our league. The soccer on display is always marvellous to watch.”

The winner of the UFA Super Cup goes home with a floating trophy and a cash prize of R6 000. The Player of the Tournament has a reward of R500, the same Top Goal Scorer.

There is a Man of the Match for every fixture with the award worth R100.

According to Ndlovu, Butshe Shining Stars have won the cup six times, Ndolwane are second with five titles, Dupute have clinched it twice while Bubi time and Makhulela have only been champions once each.

“The proceeding­s generated from gate taking are shared 50/50 with the host primary school. We expect a lot of people to grace our tournament. An invitation has been extended to top teams to come for talent scouting. We believe this tournament possesses the quality they need.

“There will be lots of entertainm­ent, from Dupute Warriors Band from traditiona­l dancing groups,’’ Ndlovu said.

Since the tournament is self sponsored, each team contribute­s R2 000 in terms of entry fee with the total amount of R18 000 then used for prizes.
