Mafu starts Hwange revival

- Mehluli Sibanda Senior Sports Reporter

SEEING that they were demoted from the Premier Soccer League last season, there is certain to be pressure on Hwange to make a quick return to the country’s top flight.

Hwange were relegated to the Zifa Southern Region Division One League where they will look to plot their way back to PSL. Recently appointed coach, Bongani Mafu wants to first see what they will be coming up against this season before they declare their intentions.

“We need to know and respect our opponents before making bold statements in good time, after playing all teams we should have a clear picture of our chances or need to improve,’’ said Mafu.

The road promises to be bumpy for Hwange who lost Nomore Chinyerere to FC Platinum,

Tymon Mvula to Dynamos and then offloaded their senior players. Chipangano are in the hunt for new players who can guide them back to the PSL.

Mafu is aware that the road back to the PSL will be no easy one and is keen to build on his team’s confidence from the after effects of relegation.

“We are just starting a journey. From relegation blues to self confidence and belief. We are in a league with seasoned campaigners so it’s a tough piece of work. We need to work hard and smart just to cope. From there we will keep improving,’’ he said.

Khumbulani Mbano, the Hwange administrator said they had promoted a lot of junior players to the first team this season.

Hwange will face a stiff challenge for the Zifa Southern Region Division One title from the likes of Talen Vision, ZPC Hwange and Makomo.
