LAST year was such a remarkable one for bodybuilder Kylie MacDonald when she conquered in competitions she entered locally as well as in neighbouring countries.

The biggest success for the Bulawayo-based bodybuilder came in October last year when she excelled at the Ultimate Nabba/WFF South African Championships in Pretoria. MacDonald won the Bikini Model and went on to bag the overall Bikini title, a massive achievement for someone who was competing in South Africa for the first time in her blossoming career.

Her success in South Africa had opened many doors of opportunities as she was meant to compete in international competitions. Most of the shows she was meant to take part in this year were called off due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, which saw travelling being restricted as most countries went on lockdown.

The easing of travel restrictions has opened the door for MacDonald who is on Saturday competing in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness Summer Superbodies in Krugersdorp, South Africa.

MacDonald is excited by the prospects of taking part in her first and only competition for 2020. The 27-year-old is entering the bikini fitness category.

“I’m feeling really excited about this competition coming up, I’ve had more than a break during lockdown so I’m looking forward to it,’’ MacDonald said.

She has never taken part in an IFBB competition before and she is pleased by the way her body is looking like considering that Covid-19 had led to the closure of gyms in Zimbabwe. MacDonald is eyeing finishing in the top three in her category.

“This is my first time taking part in an IFBB competition and I’m actually impressed with my condition at the moment considering gyms have been closed for some months now. As a champion I would like to expect more but I would really be happy making it in the top three even if it’s not first place,’’ she said.

MacDonald has been working hard at Body Works Gym for close to four months as she prepared for the IFBB Summer Superbodies.

“I’ve been preparing for this competition for about four months now, it’s been a roller coaster but I’ve managed to focus. For now closer to competition day I’ve just been taking it easy in the gym and getting a bit of rest.”

MacDonald is heading to South Africa on Wednesday, which will afford her enough time to prepare and get as much rest ahead of the competition on Saturday. — @Mdawini_29
