- Judith Phiri Sunday News Reporter

ROBBERS on Friday pounced on the Vehicle Inspection Depot in Bulawayo getting away with more than US$1 000 and $255 000, police have confirmed.

Writing on their official Twitter handle, police said eight unidentified suspects armed with iron bars as well as screwdrivers attacked three security guards who were on duty at the depot before stealing US$1 150 and $255 000 cash.

“The suspects disarmed one of the security guards and stole a 303 rifle, serial number 556340HW38 with no ammunition. Anyone with information to contact any nearest police station,” said the police.

Meanwhile, in a statement yesterday, National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed a report circulating on the social media platform on an alleged recovery and interception of large shipment of weapons in West Nicholson, Matabeleland South Province.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police categorically states that it has not received such a report. The police therefore dismisses this false story with the contempt it deserves and the public is advised to ignore it,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now conducting investigations with a view of establishing the motive behind this false story.”
