Hwange guard embarks on rewarding brick-making journey

JABULANI Moyo (49) from Empumalanga, Hwange earns a living from making bricks for resale along the Vehicle Inspection Department road in the mining town.

Moyo’s is employed as a security guard, and makes extra money from brick moulding.

“I am a security guard and after work, I come here to make bricks and later sell.”

Moyo said business was very competitive, as the number of people in the trade has increased.

“At times there is no business there are many of us making bricks in this areas,” he said, adding that customers come from as far as Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, and that he started the trade in 2016.

“For an old man like me, I have to hire people to work for me and they need to get paid too. In the year 2015 when I built my house, bricks cost 10c each but currently prizes have dropped from 7c to 4c each,” he said.

He said his major expenditure was coal to burn the bricks, cement and river sand, which are the major components in making bricks. He said they get water from a nearby stream, which runs throughout the year. -@5_Shannico
