BULAWAYO City Council is set to auction unclaimed vehicles that were impounded for various reasons and have been kept at the council stores section.

The local authority also intends to auction other confiscated items which include push carts (scanias), wheel barrows, axes and hoes.

According to a council report, the unclaimed vehicles include Honda Fits, Nissan Dyna, Toyota Raums, Toyota Corollas, Toyota Noah, Nissan March, BMWs, and other vehicle shells.

The auction of the abandoned vehicles is being done in terms of the Statutory Instrument 63 of 2015 (Bulawayo City Council - Clamping and Tow-away) By-Laws, 2015, and the confiscated items are as per the Bulawayo (Protection of Lands and Natural Resources) Amendment By-Laws.

“In terms of the said by-laws, it is procedural that these items are auctioned after the expiry of the 90 days when the vehicles are unclaimed and in the council storage yard. These vehicles accrued daily storage fees in addition to the tickets and tow-away fees that would have been charged to some of the vehicles.

“The auction was meant to defray council’s expenses and also recover where possible the monies for offences and tow-away fees. The auction is held as and when there are items due for auction in terms of the by-laws. The department has been notified of the items due for auction as is the norm,” reads the report.

In terms of procedure, the local authority will publish a list in the local media of the immobilised vehicles and advise the owners to claim them within a period of 30 days.
