- Sharon Chimenya Masvingo Correspondent

FARMERS in Masvingo have been assured of enough dipping chemicals for the whole year to help combat the spread of theileriosis, popularly known as January disease that decimated cattle in some of the province’s districts.

Theileriosis is a cattle disease that is transmitted by ticks and the highest number of cases are recorded in January due to high amounts of rainfall hence the name January disease. The Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Zimvac), reported that about 87 percent of cattle deaths in the province were due to diseases while seven percent was due to drought, a single percentage was due to predators and another one percent was for consumption.

Speaking during a meeting with the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development in Masvingo recently, the Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Chadzamira said the province had enough dipping chemicals to help prevent further cattle deaths that have left some families poor.

“Our statistics show that Masvingo Province has 1 040 556 cattle, 232 660 sheep and 3 121 461 indigenous chickens. We are glad to announce that the province has enough dipping chemicals for the whole year. The availability of dipping chemicals has helped the province to contain theileriosis which had caused cattle losses in Gutu and Masvingo districts.”

Still on disease control, Minister Chadzamira said the government through the Veterinary Services Department was ensuring the prevention of foot and mouth disease through erection of fence in the Gonarezhou National Park in Chiredzi district.

“The Veterinary Services Department has erected 164km of fence at Gonarezhou National Park. This is essential for the control of foot and mouth diseases as we seek to improve the value of the beef sector. The province is undertaking hay bailing to mitigate animal hunger during the dry season.”

In terms of winter wheat production, the Minister reported that the province has surpassed its target of 2 000 hectares and has planted 2 230 hectares with the biggest contribution being that of the Masvingo Development Trust in partnership with Tongaat Huletts which committed 612 hectares.

“Let me applaud the Public Private Partnership in ensuring food security in the country. On human capital development and in line with the National Developments Strategy 1(NDS1), the province has trained 23 444 farmers so far with the target being 254 380 farmers before the season starts. Training for the Presidential Rural Poultry project has reached 57 182 against an initial target of 73 501 households. These households will be given 10 chicks each,” he said.
