Zifa Southern Region race goes to the wire

- Mehluli Sibanda Senior Sports Reporter

THE race for the championship in the Zifa Southern Region is going all the way after Hwange and their neighbours ZPC Hwange won their respective matches yesterday.

At the Colliery Stadium, Hwange beat Casymn 1-0 while ZPC Hwange triumphed 3-1 over Ajax Hotspurs in Bulawayo.

Veteran midfielder Canaan Nkomo headed in the winner for Hwange who finished the match with nine players on the pitch.

Felix Chindungwe was red carded when it was 0-0 before Ernest Gwitima got injured at a time Chipangano had used all their substitutes. This meant that they played 25 minutes two players short.

Hwange have a five point lead at the top which means if ZPC entertain hopes of upstaging them, they have to win when the two teams meet in the coal mining town on Saturday.

In the battle for third spot, FC Talen Vision and Arenel Movers played out a 0-0 draw in Filabusi. Had they won, Lizwe Sweswe’s men would have jumped over the former championship contenders into third spot.
