The God of signs, wonders and miracles

-

GREETINGS beloved nation in the name of Jesus Christ. Ladies and gentlemen our God is a God of signs, wonders and miracles. What we know from the Bible itself is that God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Therefore, whatever miracles He did in the past, He can certainly do them in the present and also in the future. God is deliberate about what He does and His methodology.

Understanding the why behind miracles, signs and wonders will lift our faith and expectation of what God can do in and through us. It will also help us to have the right motivation for seeking miraculous signs. We are living in a season when so much has changed for the worse and God wants to do more in and through us than we could ever dream or imagine. God is not limited in His ability to do any miraculous work in the lives of people.

Therefore, God can choose to work miraculously in anyone and at any time according to His divine sovereign will. These words miracles, signs and wonders are often used together. All three of the words are related, but they are different. Most of the times, people generalize and lump all three words together and call everything miracles. While miracle is the common term, some things are signs, and some things are wonders.

Here are some definitions of these words; (1) Miracle — is an extraordinary or unusual event that goes beyond the usual. (2) Sign- is a miracle that has a deeper meaning. (3) Wonder — is a miracle so big that leaves people wondering. So why are these miracles, signs and wonders of significance in our lives, what role do they play? (1) They reveal Jesus’ Glory in the book of John 2:11 John wrote of Jesus’ miracle at Cana: ‘What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.’ John went on to share significant works and miracles that took place throughout Jesus’ ministry. (2) They show us what the Father is like. In the book of John 14:9-11 when Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus responded, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father . . . it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.” Jesus attributed His miraculous works to the Father. In John 5:19 He said, ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.’

(3) They confirm God’s Word The bible tells us in Acts 14:3 ‘So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.’ Evangelism and signs go hand in hand in the New Testament. God confirms and testifies the gospel through signs and miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Signs and miracles point to the cross — to the complete work that Jesus has accomplished to provide salvation, healing and freedom through His death and resurrection. (4) They result in people believing in Jesus According to John 20:30-31 Jesus performed many other signs . . . but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.’ John records many instances in his Gospel of people believing in Jesus after He performed a sign or miracle in John 2:11, 2:23; 4:39. We also see in the book of Acts 9:42 that many people believed after signs and miracles were performed.

However, it is important to point out that even though miracles, signs and wonders can get the attention of non-believers and they can draw a following and a crowd (John 6:2), but it is the work of the Holy Spirit on the hearts of individuals that brings conversion. Many people who saw the signs Jesus performed did not believe (John 12:37) There are certain miracles that will only happen when you create a certain environment. There is a principle that attracts miracles. Ladies and gentlemen God wants you to participate in attracting your miracle. Miracles need people who will activate them and that is by faith. The bible tells us that faith comes by hearing the word of God. The church must be filled with the word of God. The bible tells us about the woman with the issue of blood who purposed in her heart through faith to receive her miracle and Jesus says to her ‘your faith has healed you’. So meaning her faith attracted her miracle.

Therefore, even in our present age, there is evidence of God working miraculously in the lives of people. God still heals; God still gives spiritual gifts to men and He is able to perform any miraculous sign that will ultimately serve His purpose and give glory to Him alone. Jesus said in Mark 16:17-18, “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” So meaning if you believe, miracles signs and wonders will follow you. When the disciples were told ‘And these signs shall follow them that believe’, they went out preaching, miracle signs and wonders following them because they believed. Verses 19-20 go on to say that after Jesus had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God and the disciples went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Miracles signs and wonders follow those who believe Jesus Christ and the kingdom of heaven is not just in word but also in power. I would like to invite you to receive Jesus as your personal Lord and saviour, by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that he is your Lord and saviour, and you shall be saved. May God bless you all.
