Chirisa tackles witches in Hollywood

ZIMBABWEAN actor Tongayi Chirisa is set to dive into the world of the supernatur­al, as he takes up a role on American multinatio­nal cable channel AMC’s new upcoming series, Mayfair Witches.

The cable channel last week released the first images from the new series, which is set to air in early 2023, with Chirisa taking a prominent role. The actor also shared the first-look images on his Instagram page.

Blockbuste­r roles have been coming in thick and fast for Chirisa, who in 2020 starred alongside Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, Peter Gallagher, and J K Simmons in Hulu and Neon’s critically acclaimed romantic comedy Palm Springs.

The film debuted at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and sold for a record breaking $22 million rights deal. Chirisa, who is represente­d by Domain Talent and Industry Entertainm­ent, also starred opposite superstar actress and musician Janelle Monáe in Lionsgate’s thriller Antebellum.

This year, Tongai Chirisa starred in Rwanda genocide movie, Trees of Peace, which was snapped up by streaming giant, Netflix.

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches focuses on an intuitive young neurosurge­on, Dr Rowan Fielding (played by Alexandra Daddario), who discovers that she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. As Rowan grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generation­s.

The cast also includes Harry Hamlin (L.A. Law) as Cortland Mayfair, Beth Grant (The Mindy Project) as Carlotta Mayfair and, Jack Huston (Fargo) as the shape-shifting entity Lasher, Annabeth Gish (The Haunting of Hill House) as Diedre Mayfair, Erica Gimpel (God Friended Me) as Ellie Mayfair and Jen Richards (Better Things) as Jojo.
