Rest in peace dear comrades
EDITOR — I would like to offer my condolences to the Chitepo family and to the nation at large following the passing on of Cde Victoria Fikile Chitepo. I would also like to offer my condolences to the Mwashita and Chinamano families following the death of Cdes Vivian Mwashita and Chinyani Chinamano.
It is terribly sad that within a short space of time the nation has lost a liberation icon in Cde Chitepo and other struggle stalwarts.
It is at a time like this that one is conscious not only of the fragility of human life, but also the need to honour those we revere while they are among us.
There is also a need for us to immortalise these people through literature and the arts.
These people played an integral part in the liberation of our country particularly Cde Chitepo and as such her story should be told for generations to come.
It is unfortunate that many of our heroes and heroines pass on before they pen their own biographies and share with us their stories.
The media and other historians should encourage those who remain to write their stories so that we are informed of what transpired from those who lived through the experiences.
Zimbabwe is a nation that was built off the success of the liberation struggle and our war veterans should be respected and revered.
If their stories are captured and told this is one way to ensure that we can do this.
Cde Chitepo has been proclaimed a national heroine and deservedly so.
She exhibited great resolve following the assas- sination of her husband in continuing to support the efforts for liberation.
In an independent Zimbabwe she served honourably in Government and as a Member of Parliament in Manicaland Province and also as a Cabinet minister.
Many young women should look to her and the work that she did and accomplished for inspiration.
To her I say thank you Cde Chitepo, may your dearly departed soul rest in eternal peace.
