HARARE, 14 April 1991. The four black Harare City councillors elected to the first majority rule council in 1980 and are still on council, became aldermen of the city last night.

They are the first black mayor of Harare, now Alderman Tizirai Gwata, Ald Noel Chaya, Ald Bernard Nehumba and Ald Thomas Mapanzure.

They were all presented with Aldermanic certificates, badges and mementos and sign the Aldermanic Roll. The honour of alderman of the city is given to councillors who have served for 10 years or more and those honoured last night were elected into council in October 1980.

Since then, they have managed to survive two other council elections. The first black alderman for Harare was Cde Tony Gara who won a seat in Greendale in 1979 and who has now joined Parliament. They bring the total number of alderman Harare has ever had to 36. Last night’s occasion was memorable to them because their spouses and relatives joined in the celebrations.
