We need to harvest rainwater for future use

- Worried Zimbabwean, Via e-mail.

ZIMBABWE seems to be receiving a lot of rainfall this year. This is a far-cry from the situation last year when the whole region was ravaged by drought.

This year we expect a bumper harvest from Government’s Command Agriculture initiative. It is a time for Zimbabwe to shine.

But my fear is that next year things could be different. We might not have the same amount of rainfall after such a good season this year. That means we must learn to plan as a nation. Most districts and provinces in the country do not have large dams. Much of the rainwater is being lost, and come next year, we will be crying again.

It is common cause that we have districts which are drought-prone but this year they have good rains. If there were dams they would conserve water to use in a drought year.
