SALISBURY, 16 January 1967. — If Salisbury’s Asians and Coloureds living in predominantly European areas are forced to leave their homes they will have to face the problem of where to live next.
It seems the main immediate difficulty in any resettlement scheme will be a shortage of new houses for them-not a shortage of building land in the traditionally Asian and Coloured areas. One spokesman for the Coloured community, Mr J. Culverwell, maintains that the problem would be acute.
According to his estimates there is a total of 74 Coloured families scattered over Avondale (15), Southerton (37), Waterfalls (6), Braeside (12) and Hillside (4). He said this week that there is already a waiting list of 200 Coloured families wanting accommodation in Arcadia “or anywhere”.
The City Valuator and Estates Manager, Mr D. Sandison, points out, however, that there are only about 100 Coloured people on the official waiting list.
