SALISBURY, 20 June 1942. — The Salisbury City Council will grow vegetables for donation to the city orphanages, the Troops Hosted, Greenwood House and other deserving institutions if a recommendation by the Health and Social Welfare Committee is adopted.
The Parks Superintendent reported to the Committee that he had discussed the idea of growing vegetables in the Public gardens with a large number of people and found them all totally opposed to the idea.
Growing vegetables would interfere with private enterprise. He suggested, however, that vegetables might be grown at the municipal nursery near the abattoir and given to deserving institutions, and that the Council might sell surplus compost to assist people to grow vegetables.
In adopting these suggestions the Committee recommended the Council to approve setting aside two acres at the municipal nursery for growing vegetables for institutions and to approve sales of surplus compost.
