Hubby scalded over call from ex-wife

- Midlands Bureau

A 28-YEAR-OLD woman from Delsford suburb in Gweru has been arrested for attempted murder after scalding her husband with cooking oil after he allegedly received a phone call from his ex-wife.

Tendai Wasara appeared before Gweru magistrate Ms Midred Matuvi yesterday facing one count of attempted murder. She was remanded in custody to March 12. Her husband Mr Cedric Govere is admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital after suffering about 50 percent burns.

It is the State case that on February 13, Mr Govere allegedly received a phone call from his ex-wife who was asking about their children’s custody.

Wasara was allegedly not amused by the phone call.

The following day while Mr Govere was resting in the house, Wasara allegedly boiled two pots with cooking oil and water.

She then allegedly poured boiling cooking oil on Mr Govere’s chest, hands and legs, resulting in him suffering 50 percent burns.

The court heard that Mr Govere tried to protect Wasara by lying to hospital staff that a pot of boiling water had fell on him.

Some days later, Mr Govere revealed that he had been scalded by his wife after receiving a phone call from his ex-wife, leading Wasara’s arrest. Ms Gracious Rongai appeared for the State. Meanwhile, a car washer along Tenth Street in Gweru was electrocuted after he allegedly used his tongue to test if an electricity wire was live.

The man popularly known as Mpofu was trying to connect a vacuum cleaner that he wanted to use to clean a customer’s vehicle.

“The man wanted to connect his hoover (vacuum cleaner) and he took a live wire and placed it on his tongue to test whether if it had power and was electrocuted in the process.”

Acting Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said she was still to receive a report of the incident.
